Preface

SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS

When I was in the first grade of school, our teacher read us a Psalm each morning. Psalm 100 quickly became MY PSALM when I heard, “Make joyful noise unto the Lord, serve the Lord with Gladys.”

GLADYS MARIE VEALE NOLTING (INTRODUCTION TO VOLUME I A SELF-PUBLISHED COOKBOOK)

INTRODUCTION

BY GLADY’S SON, EARL NOLTING JUNIOR

In the early part of her career, Gladys Nolting was involved with life as wife and homemaker. When her son, Earl Nolting, Jr., was in Junior High and High School, she secured a job writing advertising copy for WCSI Radio, in Columbus, Indiana.

After several years with WCSI, Gladys, with her husband, Earl Seeger Nolting, Sr., looked into the possibility of purchasing a radio station. They located, bought and co-owned WHDM Radio, a 5,000-watt AM radio station in McKenzie, Tennessee.

Gladys and Earl were equally involved in all aspects of the management and operation of this radio station. Gladys wrote advertising copy and hosted a weekday morning “woman’s” program for many years.

Eventually, they decided to sell WHDM and chose to relocate to Atlanta, GA. After the sale of WHDM, Gladys worked for and completed her employment career as an Executive Secretary to the Dean of the Dental School at Emory University.

Upon retirement, Gladys and Earl, Sr., relocated to the Four Seasons senior retirement facility in Columbus, Indiana.

After Earl’s death in 1990, Gladys began writing down her thoughts on a Gregg Ruled Steno Pad, filling 40 sheets of 6” x 9” lined paper. In addition to writing down her thoughts, she jotted on the inside cover of the Steno Pad her blood pressure (140/90) and her LDL (the “bad” cholesterol) of 140 (which she wrote was “too high”).

The format of this book was intended to guide the reader through their journey of aging and, for some, grief.

Good wishes. Earl Nolting

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

BY GLADY’S SON, EARL NOLTING JUNIOR

As you read the ideas in this brief book, you will surely recall some of the bible verses, hymns, and quotations that have sustained you in the past. As you reflect on the text, I suggest that you write or sketch your thoughts and feelings in the open spaces throughout the book or on the notes pages in the back. Your responses could then provide the start of an ongoing personal journal for you. What started as someone else’s story then becomes rewritten and made personal for your life.
